Equality & Diversity

The fundamental purpose of Middlesbrough College is:

“Driving Ambition, Inspiring Success”

Our commitment to Equality and Diversity is reflected in Our Values, which include;

* Driving Inclusion

* Promoting mutual respect and wellbeing for all

We ensure all college services, programmes and operations reflect commitment to and implementation of equality, diversity and inclusion.

Middlesbrough College is aware that it has a legal duty to;

* Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and any other conduct prohibited by the Equality Act 2010

* Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it

* Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it

As part of that commitment the College aims to be one of the leading organisations for equality and diversity and acknowledges that equality of opportunity and the recognition and promotion of diversity are integral to its success. The College will maintain an inclusive working and learning environment where students, staff and visitors feel welcome, safe, valued and respected, as well as embracing and nurturing the diversity of skills and talent with its current and potential community. The College will also ensure that curriculum content, materials and delivery reflect the college’s commitment to equality and diversity.

What do we mean by Equality & Diversity?

Equality of opportunity describes addressing those barriers that prevent social, economic and political participation due to a persons’ race, gender, religion or belief, sexual orientation, disability, age, class or gender reassignment.

Diversity is based upon the concept that people should be valued as individuals with different skills, personalities and work styles. Recognising and treating everyone with respect and promoting both individual and group differences.

Our students’ vision of Equality & Diversity is illustrated in the design of the E&D Tree which was created by Emma Shiel a Level 1 Travel & Tourism student in October 2010.
