Carol, who began her career as an apprentice, now delivers the NEBOSH General Certificate to a number of organisations helping them stay compliant with health and safety law.

Northern Skills Group, the training arm of Middlesbrough College, deliver the programme on either a day or evening class and cover a range of health and safety modules that encourages learners to rethink how they act in the workplace.

It’s this change in thinking that can help organisations not only save their employees from potential accidents but also save themselves from hefty fines. Teaching many people on health and safety courses for over four years, Carol knows first-hand how important the NEBOSH General Certificate is.

She said:

“When people think of health and safety training they tend to think of a course that essentially ticks a box for their employer. The NEBOSH General Certificate is worlds away from that and touches upon so many aspects around health and safety including; accident reporting, management systems, understanding risk and mental health.

I’ve had many people feedback after the training how it has changed their whole perception around work and risk, challenging current health and safety protocol with confidence and helping their employer make changes for the better.”

Carol has trained organisations such as KP Snacks, Middlesbrough Council and North Yorkshire Fire Brigade and is responsible for her delegates achieving an overall average 90% achievement rate for the programme, higher than the national average of 76%.

The pandemic hasn’t stopped the organisations gaining vital qualifications in health and safety either:

“We’ve been able to move our learning online so we can still give employers and their staff the essential training they need. We’ve worked hard as a college to ensure we can still deliver these key programmes during such difficult times.”

Joining the Middlesbrough College group in 2004, Carol loves that her working day has never been the same:

“Every day is different, I’ve taught such a wide range of programmes from level one to level five, from full time students to adult learners. Everyone has a different need in terms of learning and I really enjoy helping each and every one of them achieve.”

Outside of work Carol is a keen rugby player which she hopes to fit back into her life soon!
